The Tambopata national park is deeply imbedded in the beautiful Amazon rainforest by the Tambopata river. In this area the locals are living in villages and run tourist lodges to teach the tourists to appreciate nature the way they do. We sleep at the lodge and do tours out into the forest, where we explore the plants, trees and learn about the wildlife. We might see parrots called Macaws, caimans, big otters, monkeys, capivaras and many different kind of birds. If we’re lucky with the weather we can enjoy a gorgeous sunset over the forest. Welcome to the jungle!

Day to day presentation:
(B= Breakfast, L= Lunch, D= Dinner)
Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata.
At the arrival to Puerto Maldonados airport you are met by the local staff and will be transferred to the local office, located about 5 minutes from the airport. Here we repack our luggage into a smaller duffel bag, which we get to borrow, only bringing the most important things we will need for the next coming days. Our big luggage we put in a locked storage.
We then travel by bus or car about 45 minutes to the indigenous village Infierno. From here we will take a motorboat down the Tambopata river to our lodge. The boatride takes about 30 minutes and we are served a typical jungle lunch along the way. Depending on your flights arrival time you might get the lunch at the lodge instead.
At the arrival to the lodge we are welcomed by the lodge manager and are shown to our rooms. We will also meet our guide that will present the activities we are going to do during our tour to the rainforest.
The first activity is a walk to the observation tower. Here we climb up high above the treetops to study the rainforest from above. If we are lucky we might get to see a beautiful sunset over the rainforest. When the dark embeds the forest we walk back to the lodge. By the help of our flashlights we look for the nocturnal animals. If we are lucky we might get to see many insects, amphibia’s, giant spiders, bats and nocturnal birds. The sounds in the rainforest at night differs from the once you hear during the day and if you are real quiet you might even hear the leaves falling to the ground.
Back at the lodge we are served dinner before it is time to turn in for the night. (L,D)
Day 2: Tambopata.
After breakfast we take the boat about 30 minutes down the river. Then we take a walk for about 25 minutes to the oxbow lake Three Chimbadas. The lake is located in a beautiful area sourrounded by aduaje palmtrees and rainforest vegetation. Here we have the possibility to see many birds like Hoatzins (a kind of clumsy bird with a prehistoric look), herons and many different kingfishers.
If we are lucky we might also get to see monkeys, macaws, caimans and the big otter (pteronoura brasilienses), which is an endangered species.
On our way back to the lodge we pass by a Parrot Clay Lick where parrots come to eat the minerals and the salts that are found in the red clay. This is a colorful show which is at its best in the early morning when many birds visit the area.
When we come back to the lodge we are given a refreshing soda before we can take some rest. Why not try the hammock and listen to the sounds of the rainforest.
After lunch we visit the Ñape Botanical Garden with its medicine garden. We meet with the elder men of the community called a shaman and get to learn about nature medicine. (Should the shaman not be at the lodge at the time of your visit our guide will do the explanation).
Our guide will show us the gardens medical plants such as ayahuasca, Para Para, chacruna, chuchuhuasi , uña de gato (cat ‘claw) and ajosacha. The locals uses these plants to cure illnesses such as: cold, cough, fever, rheumatism, diabetes, stomach and intestinal problems. At the end of the tour we are offered to try some of the medicines/remedies. (It’s voluntary.)
Our next activity is shooting a crossbow. A member from the society will explain to us how the Ese Eja people used crossbows back in the day to go hunting for food to their families. After a demonstration we are given the opportunity to try. You are suppose to hit a board standing a bit away so this exercise requires quite a bit of concentration.
Tip! Remember to pull the arrow backwards and not the string!
As the dark falls over the forest we go out looking for South Americas alligators called Caimans. We float down the river looking for these mighty creatures. The caimans are easiest to spot at night when their eyes are reflecting red in the glow from our flashlights. With a little luck we might even get to see other nocturnal animals. (B,L,D)
Day 3: Tambopata – Puerto Maldonado.
After breakfast we say goodbye to our lodge and take the boat back to Infierno. You are then transferred back to Puerto Maldonado and the office where you get back your luggage. After repacking your things and returning the duffel, you are given transfer to the airport. This concludes your visit to the rainforest. (B)
For those who wish you can stay an extra day and take a tour according to below:
Day 3: Tambopata.
After breakfast we visit a mammal clay lick where the mammals come to eat from salts and minerals. The mammals visit the area at all times of the day so it’s difficult to say which animals we get to see but with a little luck we might spot reindeers, agouti, squirrels, white – lipped peccaries, collar peccaries and tapir.
We return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon we visit an organic fruit garden. We take about a fifteen minutes boat ride to come to the garden which belongs to the Infierno village. Here they grow several different crops and fruits from the Amazon region. Every plant and tree in the garden have its own purpose. When we get back to the lodge, we enjoy a quiet dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Tambopata – Puerto Maldonado.
After breakfast we say goodbye to our lodge and take the boat back to Infierno. You are then transferred back to Puerto Maldonado and the office where you get back your luggage. After repacking your things and returning the duffel, you are given transfer to the airport. This concludes your visit to the rainforest. (B)
