Day 1: Guayaquil – Puerto Lopez.
We get a private transfer from Guayaquil to Puerto Lopez. Puerto Lopez is a charming fishing village located by the Pacific coast. In the area you will find the Machalillas national park which has a big focus on ecotourism. From June to October you can see whales pass by in the waters just of the coast. We check in to the hotel and then it is time to enjoy the beaches!
Day 2: Isla de la Plata.
Today we take a tour to the Island Isla de la Plata which is also called the Silver Island! The island is located in the Machalilla national park and is a popular site to visit to get the experience of “Galapagos” at the mainland. Some joking voices calls it the poor mans Galapagos since it is not as expensive to visit as the actual Galapagos. However there is nothing poor about the animal life in this region as it is just as good here as in the actual Galapagos. Between June and October you can see whales moving in the area. (Best time is the end of July until August.) But there is so much more to experience here. While snorkelling above a coral reef, you may spot colourful reef fish, turtles and sometimes even southern sea lions.
You will be picked up from your hotel and brought to the dock, from where you have a 1 hour speed boat ride to Isla de la Plata. This uninhabited pirate’s island breathes indeed the typical insular ambience. You can walk right through the breeding colonies of magnificent frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies, gracious red-billed tropicbirds soar along the cliffs and there reside even a few strayed pairs of waved albatross (which are supposed to breed only on Española Island, Galapagos). But that is extraordinary; Isla de la Plata mainly harbours continental flora and fauna and lacks the uniquely evolved endemic species of Galapagos. Though, it is with good reason that this island has been declared Important Bird Area as well. Aromatic palo santo bushes hide a rich population of warbler finches, vermillion flycatchers, long-tailed mockingbirds, Peruvian meadowlarks, lizards and snakes. After tour you will be transferred back to the hotel. (B,L)
