Today we take a City tour of Stone Town. The tour starts with a visit to Zanzibars lush market where you can find fresh vegetables and tropical fruits.
We then move on to visit and old Cathedral built in 1874 which is located on the place where the old slave market was. The high altar of the cathedral is built on the place where the slaves used to be whipped. Slavery was abolished on the island in 1873 by the Sultan of Zanzibar.
The tour also takes us to the old residency of the Sultan, ‘Tip Tip House’, the old fort, ‘Peoples Palace’ and ’the House of Wonders’ where you can marvel over the long history of the island.
The tour ends with a walk through the narrow streets of old Stone Town, which is the heart of Zanzibars history. (B)
Day 3: Stone Town – Jozani – Stone Town.
Today we visit Jozani forest which is an ecosystem in a class for itself. Jozani Forest is located about 35 km southeast of Zanzibar town in the south region. This is the only natural forest remaining on the island. Jozani covers an area of about 10 km covered with forest, swamps and evergreen trees.
Jozani represents an important refuge for the remaining Ungula fauna such as the rare red Colobus monkey, the small Zanzibar leopard and antelope, such as the rare Zanzibar duicker and sunni. If we are lucky we might get to see these animals during the day! (B,L)
