Samburu Game Reserve got its name from the Samburu people who have live here for many years. It is located about 6 hours drive north of Nairobi. This unique park is home of many different species of animals such as the long necked Gerenuk, the reticulated giraffe, Somali Ostrich, the Gravy Zebra and the Beisa Oryx. The Uaso Nyiro River that passes through the park is a main source of water for the animals that inhabit this semi desert game reserve. The river is also home to some huge crocodiles.
Samburu game reserve is one of the two areas in which conservationist George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness. The famous Lioness adopted baby Oryx several times and kept them safe from other predators in the area.
